You will notice a new signatory below in this issue's letter: We are beyond thrilled and honored that Nancy Hagans, lifetime ICU RN and president of our latest affiliate organization, New York State Nurses Associa- tion, has joined us on the NNU Council of Presidents. Nancy is a formidable leader and just recently helped her New York City nurse colleagues take on the city's hospital industry with two major strikes that captured the attention of the entire country and even around the world. The nurses emerged victorious, and we're sure it's in no small part due to Nancy's unwavering, no- nonsense voice and leadership. So please welcome Nancy! You can read all about her and the roots of her union activism in this issue of the magazine. Also in this issue, we have lots of coverage of our nurses on the move, taking collective action on everybody's num- ber one current top problem: unsafe short staffing. Nurses across the country held a National Day of Action Jan. 26 to demand safe staffing levels. Michigan nurses recently polled nurses and identified that safe staffing was the top factor that would keep nurses working in direct care. As we men- tioned, New York City nurses went on strike for three days over this very issue. And you know NNU nurses are making history because we are, in fact, currently in a museum! Read about how California Nurses Association and nurse leaders are spot- lighted in a special California Museum exhibition on the history and legacy of Filipnx American workers in the Golden State. Registered nurses this January again topped Gallup's public opinion poll as the most trusted and ethical profes- sion. It's because our patients know we have their best interests at heart and we, with the backing of our unions, will never stop fighting for them. Laban!
