The rule of thumb is: Would you want this statement, comment, picture, or video about yourself to appear on a public bulletin board? Today, taking a screenshot of any image or post and forwarding to coworkers, the employer, or the public takes only a few seconds. The National Labor Relations Board settled a lawsuit against a Connecticut ambulance company that fired an employee after she used Facebook while on her home computer, on her own time, to criticize her boss. The employer's policies interfered with long-standing legal protections that allow workers to discuss wages, hours, and working conditions with coworkers, the NLRB said. Though this case reinforces the rule that employees have a right to discuss wages, hours, and working conditions with coworkers, even on social media sites, it does not necessarily mean that there is free rein to discuss any- thing work related. For example, patient confidentiality must still be protected no matter what the forum.
