RNs in Motion ยป 3 Board of Directors OUR ROOTS, OUR GROWTH On behalf of the elected RN-members of our Board of Directors, welcome to California Nurses Association (CNA). We are proud to be at the helm of our organi- zation in a period marked by unparalleled growth and tremendous change for our profession and our patients. CNA has grown from 18,000 RNs in 1995, located primarily in Northern California, to more than 100,000 RNs in facilities across California. National Nurses Organizing Committee (NNOC) was launched by CNA in 2004 in response to nurses' requests to build a national movement of direct-care RNs, modeled on the success of CNA. Together, they are officially one organization. NNOC now represents more than 43,000 RNs in hospitals located in 22 additional states across the country. These include more than 15,700 Veterans Health Administration (VA) RNs at 23 VA hospitals in 12 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. In 2009, CNA/NNOC played a lead role in bringing state nursing associations across the nation together into one national organization, National Nurses United (NNU). NNU stands today at nearly 225,000 RNs from every state in the nation, and is now the largest union and professional association of registered nurses in United States history. At last, the nation's RNs have a voice. The establishment of NNU brought to life the dream of a powerful, national movement of direct-care RNs. Our movement is also building powerful connections to nurses around the world. In 2013, NNU and its affil- iates joined forces with union affiliates from 14 other nations to form Global Nurses United (GNU). GNU has more than doubled in size since then and collectively advocated for nurses' and workers' rights, stronger pandemic protections, and government action on the health impacts of the climate crisis.
