Nurses at Ascension Seton Medical Center in Austin vote to join NNOC, making it the largest private-sector unionized hospital in Texas. Nurses celebrate signing of S.B. 1334, a bill sponsored by CNA to guarantee meal and rest breaks for public-sector and University of California health care workers. The New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), with nearly 42,000 members, votes to affiliate with NNU, bringing NNU's membership to nearly 225,000. Nurses vote to join NNOC at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, the largest hospital in Wichita, Kansas and the first private sector hospital to become unionized by RNs in the city. New contracts ratified by RNs and nurse practitioners at 21 Kaiser Permanente facilities in Northern California, and RNs at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center (LAMC), set the highest standards in the nation. 2023 NNU members hold a National Day of Action to demand that hospitals end unsafe "crisis standards of care" and increase staffing. RN actions underscore that the so-called "nursing shortage" is manufactured by the hospital industry as an excuse for their intentional short staffing. Nurses at Ascension Via Christi Saint Joseph Hospital in Wichita vote to join NNOC, making this the second hospital to join NNOC in Wichita, Kan., in less than four months. Registered nurses at Adventist Health Lodi Memorial Hospital vote overwhelmingly to join CNA. NNU reintroduces package of federal bills intended to improve the health and safety of nurse and patients including the Nurse Staffing Standards for Hospital Patient Safety and Quality Care Act; The Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act; the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act; and the VA Employee Fairness Act. Registered nurses at Sutter Davis in Davis, Calif. vote to affiliate with CNA, becoming the 18th Sutter facility in California to join CNA. In all, CNA represents more than 8,500 Sutter nurses in California. Nurses applaud passage of A.B. 1007, CNA-sponsored legislation to protect health care workers and patients from toxic surgical smoke. CNA/NNOC holds national convention in San Francisco, Calif. celebrating their "120 Years Legacy of Advocacy." The convention includes a convening of Global Nurses United, with 250 nurses from 33 countries across six continents. With their historic vote to join NNOC, RNs at Ascension Saint Agnes Hospital make their hospital the first to have unionized nurses in Baltimore history, and the fourth Ascension hospital to affiliate with NNOC in the short span of 13 months. Registered nurses at University Medical Center (UMC) in New Orleans, La. vote by a landslide to join NNOC, making UMC the first private-sector hospital to unionize in Louisiana history. 2024 Registered nurses at Northern Maine Medical Center (NMMC) in Fort Kent, Maine, vote overwhelmingly to become part of NNOC. After two historic strikes, nurses at Marina del Rey Hospital in Marina del Rey, Calif. ratify a new contract winning protections to improve patient safety and nurse retention. CNA sponsors bills to advance single payer health care in California, increase equity in clinical placements for future nurses, and remove medical debt from credit reports. Hundreds of CNA members from across the state hold a protest at Kaiser Permanente's international conference on artificial intelligence (A.I.) technology in San Francisco to highlight their patient safety concerns with the hospital industry's rush to implement this untested and unregulated technology. Nurses fight to stop the closure or sale of Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital, the only hospital in San Benito County.
