RNs in Motion » 49 What You Need to Know YOUR MEMBERSHIP MEMBERSHIP As a member of the bargaining unit, you are protected by a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between your hospital and CNA. This CBA, or contract, specifies your wages, hours, benefits, rights, professional pro- cedures, and many other matters. You should obtain a copy of the agreement from your nurse representative/ shop steward or labor representative. What Does CNA Membership Offer Me? Representation at work Every year, nurses represented by CNA have won impressive gains through collective bargaining. Large wage hikes, weekend and shift differentials, and increased pay (tenure steps) for long-term nurses have become the norm. CNA won enactment in California of A.B. 394 requiring RN-to-patient staffing ratios in all acute-care hospital units and NNU lobbies at the federal level for nationwide legislation benefiting nurses and patients.
