Candidate Statements:1 RH Opener 3/16/09 Diane Koorsones: As a professional nurse in California I must assume responsible leadership in my community and my field. We need to work hard and together with other organizations to ensure that all people have the best possible nursing care and health protection. Martha Kuhl: As a staff nurse activist my goals have been: economic and social justice, making healthcare a right, controlling our practice, maintaining our role as the direct care giver and patient advocate, organizing new members, promoting member participation, and control of how our dues are spent. Reelect me Treasurer. Brenda Langford: I have worked on all levels of the NNOC as FBC, PPC Chairperson, Chief Nurse Representative, Nurse Negotiator, OFH Board Representative, Single Payer Committee and the present Regional Director. I am committed to improving working conditions for Nurses and care for our patients. Malinda Markowitz: I am honored to serve on the Presidents Council. I have spoken locally, statewide and nationally advocating for RNs, patient safety while ensuring the best contracts. We need to keep moving forward on the National front for staffing ratios, protecting our practice and a universal single payer health care system. Robert Anthony Marth Jr.: I am committed to achieving Ratios nationally, and a Single Payer Healthcare System where no patient is denied care regardless of their ability to pay. I believe RNs/NPs should be in RN unions to achieve power for their profession and patients. I will continue to fight layoffs, encroachment into RN practice. Bonnie Martin: As an experienced board member, I understand the organizations current goals and directions. During difficult times, informed leadership is crucial in protecting our gains and moving them forward. It is my desire to continue assisting CNA as we work toward improved contracts for existing members and in organizing unrepresented nurses. Jose S. Martinez Melena: Being more involved and being aware of the needs of nurses makes me willing to look into problems and the possible solutions. By being a part of the Board I can assist nurses easily and at the same time improve the system. Nurses deserve better representation. 18 REGISTERED NURSE 9:25 PM Page 18 DeAnn McEwen: I believe individual patient advocacy begins at the bedside and is inseparable from collective, social, professional, and political advocacy. It's imperative that we mobilize collectively and work to change barriers to our ability to provide safe, effective, and competent care to patients. I pledge to use my experience toward building our union. Greg Miller: As a long time activist in CNA/NNOC, I have the knowledge and experience to lead our members toward a stronger, more responsive local organization, as well as to advance CNA/NNOC toward our goals of a national staffing ratio law, single payer/Medicare for all, and nationwide organizing of RNs. Genel Morgan: My vision is for a national nurses' union that works for patient advocacy, advocates for RN scope of practice protection and a single payer healthcare system that guarantees basic healthcare for all. As a member of the board of directors I will work to fulfill that vision. Veronica Pehl: I have been a Public Health nurse for 13 years. My job and passion is to advocate for access to healthcare and educate on healthcare needs and rights as well as links to services available in the community. As a nurse leader I feel passionate as an advocate for nurses. Trande Phillips: I am a pediatric staff nurse. I have been taking care of patients for 37 years. For board members there is no pay, only satisfaction. My board work is a record of your progress in the workplace: RN ratios, and the best RN contracts and wages in the country. Veronica Rocha: Collaborating with nurses to advocate safe standards, maintain ratios and improve patient care by advocating for them. John D. Schneider: Once elected my goal will be to contact each bargaining unit in Region 9, to identify their issues of concern. I will then work with them to address these issues. I will advocate for them so they are free to advocate for their patients. quality healthcare for all in this country. I am committed to working with CNA/NNOC toward that goal. Patty Sweeney: I am running for change. California Nurses need help at home. How much of our dues are leaving Calif. How much is spent to disrupt other unions. My goal is to redirect resources back into California to local levels of representation. Christina Swift: I am a patient advocate. I am a nurse advocate. I am a nurse activist. Immediately upon walking through the doors of Fresno Kaiser I got involved with the nurse ratios fight. I have loved every minute with CNA and consider it an honor to work with CNA nurses. Alicia Torres: As an egalitarian, my passion is to continue to strive for justice, and demand Medicare for all. As nurses we will continue to work together and exert our strength and vision to prioritize the needs of our community and political life of the nation. John Trites: I am currently delegate of Region 10A. Zenei Triunfo-Cortez: I, together with Deborah, Malinda and Geri, am seeking re-election to continue: to move this organization towards achieving a universal health care single payer system; fight for safe RN to patient ratios in other states and uplift working standards for RNs both here in California and the Nation. Janice T. Webb: I believe it is important that we continue to be aware of things that can affect our profession and our patients both locally and nationally. I am also interested in helping to advance the single payer agenda. David Welch: I have helped to guide CNA/NNOC through exciting times, participated in decisions to become a national union and want to help continue on the path to building a national movement of RNs united to create a just and effective healthcare system for all. Sherri Stoddard: My years of involvement with CNA/NNOC have shown me how working as a unified group can make positive changes in our profession—both for RNs and patients.
