M
ay 12 is traditionally celebrated around the world as
Florence Nightingale's birthday, International
Nurses Day, and as the capstone to National Nurses
Week.
But instead of parroting the warm and fuzzy feel-
good slogans most corporate healthcare organizations put out about
nursing, National Nurses United and Global Nurses United mem-
bers used the day to protest the harsh healthcare realities patients
and nurses face every day by staging events in at least 11 countries.
National Nurses United also launched a nationwide advertising cam-
paign to alert nurses and the public alike about the dangers of sweeping
changes that corporations are making to healthcare. Under the slogan
"Insist on a registered nurse," the radio and video ads expose how corpo-
rate healthcare is trying to replace nurses at the bedside with health
information technology and robots, but that nothing can substitute for
the knowledge, skills, experience, and caring of a real registered nurse.
