A s nurses who depend on our
powers of observations and synthesis to understand our patients' condi-
tions and how to help them, we are natural seekers of knowledge, con-
stantly learning and growing. In our age of superficial information and
entertainment, books are a great way to delve more deeply into a particu-
lar topic, to comprehend the history of an issue and all its facets. They
often also simply tell a great story. This year, in our annual book reviews,
we cover a number of titles that specifically attempt to portray what nurses
do, as well as some that discuss particular diseases, such as AIDS and
Alzheimer's, and others that provide fascinating background into the his-
tory of medicine. We hope these reviews pique your interest to pick up one
of these books. Reading these books and summarizing them for you
always reminds us of how much we love to read and how much we can
learn through reading—and why we should all be reading more. Enjoy!
