Health and Safety with National Nurses United 18 Key Components of NNU's Workplace Violence Protections • The employer shall maintain sufficient staffing, including security personnel, who can maintain order in the facility and respond to workplace violence incidents in a timely manner. • The employer shall be prohibited from taking punitive or retaliatory action against an RN for seeking assistance and intervention from local emergency services or law enforcement when a violent incident occurs. • The employer shall develop a workplace violence prevention plan in conjunction with affected RNs. This plan shall be in effect at all times in every unit, service, and operation. • This plan shall include procedures to identify and correct workplace violence hazards, a system for responding to and investigating violent incidents, and annual program evaluation. • The employer shall provide hands-on training on the workplace violence prevention plan to all employees, with additional annual refresher trainings for health- care workers who provide direct patient care.
