Permanente's flagship Los Angeles
Medical Center held multiple
strikes this spring with a focus on
improving staffing to protect patient care
and achieving economic gains to retain
experienced RNs and boost recruitment of
new nurses. In March, for a week, and then
again in June for four days, nurses staged
spirited strikes and even enjoyed a moment
in the national spotlight when presidential
candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders issued a
public letter of support for their struggle to
protect patients.
The 1,300 RNs organized with California
Nurses Association are seeking their first
CNA collective bargaining contract after
organizing last July.
Nurses report that inadequate staffing
for the hospital's Tertiary Care Center, short
staffing for critically ill children in the hospi-
tal's pediatric intensive care unit, and lack of
proper staffing to allow nurses to take rest
