"The hospital won't be able to discipline or
terminate incompetent RNs with a CNA/NNU
contract in place."
CNA/NNU protects RNs from arbitrary and unjust actions by
management. However, disciplinary action can and does take place
against nurses in CNA/NNU-represented facilities.
The difference is that the hospital must follow progressive discipline
such as oral counseling, written warning, suspension, and termina-
tion. They must show just cause for their actions at each step and
allow a sufficient amount of time for a nurse to improve. If an RN
still cannot adequately perform her or his job, the hospital has the
right to take disciplinary action against the nurse.
