17 "There are no guarantees with collective bargaining. Management has to bargain but doesn't have to agree to anything." Myth #7 When you negotiate a first contract, you start with the pay and benefits you have now and build on them. After you win your elec- tion, the law prohibits administration from unilateral takeaways. You will decide what to ask for in your contract and vote on it. RNs have tremendous bargaining power, especially with the current nursing shortage, and enjoy overwhelming community support. It is in the hospital's best interest to keep its nurses and the public satisfied. Since 2001, CNA/NNU organized 87 new acute-care facilities and has successfully settled contracts in over 95 percent of them—every one of them with improved wages, benefits, and patient care protec- tions. RNs have gained an independent voice to better advocate for their patients and their profession. The strength of your contract will depend on the strength and participation of you and your colleagues. Truth: CPMC Pacific victory LCMT victory
