19 Step #2 The RNs at your facility decide what is important: the bargaining survey and development of proposals The bargaining survey is distributed to every RN in the bargaining unit to fill out. The FBC then tabulates the surveys to determine the unit-specific proposals (e.g. call policy for OR), current policies and prac- tices that RNs want to main- tain, and the overall priorities for bargaining. The results of these surveys help to determine bargaining priorities. Step #3 RNs are directly involved in negotiations The RN negotiating team and a CNA/NNU labor representa- tive sit across the table from the management team. CNA/NNU provides bargaining training. The RN bargaining team keeps the RNs informed through the publi- cation of bargaining updates and a hotline. General meetings occur at critical junctures throughout the negotiating process. Step #4 RNs vote on the contract When the team reaches a tentative agreement, it is brought back to the general RN membership at your facil- ity for discussion and a vote. Before a contract goes into effect, it must be approved by a majority of the RNs who vote at the facility in a secret ballot election.
