6 Your right to organize Your right to organize with CNA/NNU is protected by federal labor law, the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). Under the NLRA, you have the right to: • Sign a CNA/NNU card and attend meetings to discuss CNA/NNU. • Talk to other RNs about CNA/NNU during work and non-work time just as you are allowed to discuss personal matters. • Hand out written materials on non-work time, such as breaks, and in non-work areas, such as the cafeteria, locker rooms, and nurses' lounges. • It is illegal for your employer to require you to discuss your feelings about CNA/NNU or to discipline you in any way for exercising your rights to join or support CNA/NNU. So-called "right-to-work" laws that exist primarily in southern and western states such as Arizona, Nevada, Texas, and Florida do not affect your rights to organize with CNA/NNU and participate in union activities.
